Homeowners are often confused about whether they should choose laminate flooring or the vinyl type, and yet they want something unique and different without spending a fortune. In terms of flooring, there is nothing right or wrong when it comes to choosing the types.

There is no such thing as laminate flooring is better than the vinyl flooring, or vice versa. Moreover, as both of them share some similarities, they are quite different. If you want to get the best for your floor, you need to understand the nature of each floor in details.

Laminate vs Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl Flooring

The first thing you need to understand about laminate flooring vs vinyl is the construction or the layers. Vinyl flooring is basically a waterproof and durable type, having at least 4 layers (of material). The bottom (or the first layer) is the backing, typically made from foam or cork. Its main function is as the underlayment, meaning that you don’t need to install anything before laying down the vinyl. Moreover, it also functions as the cushion. Not only it absorbs the sound, but it also makes walking more comfortable.

After the soft cork (or foam) layer, comes the core layer. The second layer is solid and thick because it functions as the core. Afterward, it is the photographic layer (which is usually high definition) to provide visual appeal. And after that, comes the clear (wear) layer at the very top. Its basic function is to protect the photographic layer below it.

Because of the construction and the layers, vinyl flooring has pretty impressive moisture resistance level. The floor can tolerate water or moisture, even for longer time. Moreover, you should be able to find different types of modern vinyl floor, such as WPC vinyl, vinyl planks, and also Rigid Core vinyl floor. This last one is the premium type, made from the best and the most premium materials only. It is usually more superior than the standard vinyl.

Laminate Flooring

Hardwood floor is durable, natural, and long lasting, but it’s also super expensive. Homeowners who want to have hardwood-look-alike floor often turn to laminate flooring because they can have the beautiful appearance without digging too deep into their pockets. Laminate floor is basically a synthetic floor with layers almost similar to vinyl floor. Whereas vinyl floor has 4 layers of materials, laminate floor has 5.

The first bottom layer would be the soft foam. In most cases (with laminate floor), though, the first layer is usually the backer paper layer. The second layer would be the (bulk of) HDF or High Density Fiberboard. The third layer is the impact resistant layer, which is quite thin. Afterwards, it is the photographic image layer, and the top layer (and the final one) would be the clear wear layer.

However, unlike the vinyl floor that is made completely of synthetic materials, the laminate floor still incorporate natural element for its core. The inner core layer is usually from wood, which makes it sensitive to water and moisture.

Floor Installation

How-Do-Vinyl-and-Laminate-Flooring-Differ-3

Both vinyl and laminate flooring are relatively easy to tweak and install. That’s why they are often included in DIY projects; in case homeowners want to do the work on their own. In most cases, laminate flooring installation involves the click and lick mechanism. Simply fit the planks to the groove (of the adjoining planks) and make sure that they are locked in. It would close the seam. Laminate floor uses the so-called floating installation, meaning that they can be constructed over the already existing floor. You can also cut the pieces down to make sure that they fit. Using a regular table saw will do.

For vinyl flooring, on the other hand, the installation methods are quite various. There is glue down method as well as peel and stick type. If you want to choose the click and lock planks, feel free to do it too. The vinyl sheet can be a handful, and it can be a bit difficult to manage. Not only it needs exact cutting system (for the room’s angles and shapes), but the sheet itself is heavy. In most cases, you may need professional assistance. Basically, when it comes to vinyl flooring installation, it depends on the type of vinyl you choose. If you go with click and lock planks, for instance, it is easier to do and you can do it on your own.

Water Resistance

You probably have guessed it: When it comes to water resistance quality, vinyl flooring is better than laminate. Since laminate still has its own board element, which is a natural material, it has its own weak spot. The floor has limited water resistance trait. Although some of the high-end products come with better water resistant quality, the ability to withstand moisture is limited – when compared to vinyl, which is made from all synthetic materials. That’s why installing laminate floor in areas or rooms that are prone to moisture is not a very good idea. Avoid installing the floor for laundry room or bathroom.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Vinyl flooring is easier to maintain and clean. Not only you can use the broom, but you can also use wet mop. It’s even possible to scrub the floor for stubborn messes, provided that you use a safe cleaning product. Basically, vinyl floor allows you to use various different cleaning methods and products.

In the meanwhile, laminate flooring is rather difficult to clean. You can only perform dry methods for it, such as the broom or dry mop. Dry mop means that the mop should be damp, not wet. If you are okay with it, then you should have nothing to concern about.

Final Words

The decision to use whether laminate or vinyl flooring depends on your personal requirements or cleaning preferences. Do you like the wet method or the dry one? Do you want a floor with board core or synthetic one? When it comes to laminate flooring installation cost, it’s just the same with vinyl. Both of them are affordable.
