You can make kitchen cabinetry in any dimension you want. However, if you prefer stock cabinets, you have to select from standard dimensions all manufacturers follow. Usually, this is not a problem, since they are available in a range of stock sizes. Standardized sizes of kitchen cabinets don’t limit anything. Instead, standard cabinet heights, depths and widths make kitchen design much easier as you can predict the space.
Different types of cabinets have their own ranges of standard sizes. When selecting a size for a base cabinet, keep in mind that the size is from the floor to the top of the cabinet box. Meanwhile, heights don’t include the thickness of the countertop that sits atop the kitchen base cabinet.
Standard Height, Depth, and Width of a Kitchen Base Cabinet
When purchasing a stock cabinet, kitchen base cabinets usually come in 3 dimensions:
Kitchen Base Cabinet Height
This is the least variable dimension. Almost all base cabinets are available at 34.5” tall from the factory, even though they can make exceptions. If you need different heights, generally the cabinets must be custom-made to different heights.
The height of most base cabinets after adding a countertop is between 35 & 36”. It depends on the material of the countertop. Then, the height is flexible. Adding an underlay will add the height.
Of course, countertops must fit the user. Sometimes, countertops go as low as 32” and as high as 38” due to individual needs. However, these heights need custom fabrication.
Kitchen Base Cabinet Depth
The standard kitchen cabinet depths taken from the cabinet’s front outer front edge to the wall. Usually, stock base cabinets are 24” deep. Then, deeper base cabinets make it hard for you to plug-in appliances or to reach the back of the counter.
Because countertops usually overlap the base cabinets at the front, then the overall depth usually measures 25-26”. It depends on the edge detailing. Besides that, there are 12”, 15”, and 18” deep cabinets available for certain circumstances, even though not all manufacturers stock them.
Kitchen Base Cabinet Width
This is a great variable. Each cabinet tends to be designed for certain uses. Generally, widths range from 9 to 48” in 3” increments and are chosen to meet space needs as well as provide the following specific functions:
